BASIC is incorporated in the District of Columbia and has applied to the IRS to be a 501c4. The corporation is the 21st Century Schools Action Fund, which will serve as the 501c4 for the [Re]Build America’s School Infrastructure Coalition (BASIC).  The founding board members are: 

  • Jeff Vincent from the Center for Cities + Schools, UC Berkeley; 

  • Oleta Garret Fitzgerald, from Black Woman’s Rural Initiative, Jackson, Mississippi; and

  • Mary Filardo, executive director of the 21st Century School Fund

BASIC is working with Step-up Advocacy to manage the coalition. 

BASIC is a coalition with a sliding scale of fees (with no fees for governmental members).  We are committed to having diverse membership, ranging from small, local, state, national nonprofits and governmental entities to major labor and industry groups and corporations. Our goal is to ensure that this Coalition remains as large and strong as possible, especially at this critical juncture.

  • Your organization, association, union, firm, or company is part of a diverse and growing non-partisan coalition of equity, education, health, environmental, labor, and industry leaders.

  • You will be able to participate in the planning for the overall advocacy strategy and grassroots engagement of BASIC.

  • You will be kept up-to-date on federal action on public school facilities issues, the appropriations process, legislative actions, and Administrative activity through regular email updates and membership meetings.

  • You will get access to advocacy templates, advocacy toolkits, and fact sheets to use for your own group’s advocacy. 

  • You will have the opportunity to provide input about policy, events, briefings, and Congressional outreach activities on the importance of federal investments in school facilities.

  • You will be invited to meetings with key staff and members on Capitol Hill to directly advocate in support of our mission. 

  • You will have the opportunity to be elected to the Coalition's board of directors to further steer the work of the Coalition.
